Marshmallow Leaves
Description: Marshmallow leaves (Althaea officinalis) are traditionally used in herbal medicine for their richness in mucilage, plant compounds known for their soothing action. They are valued for supporting respiratory and digestive comfort, particularly when mucous membranes are irritated. Their traditional use is based on their ability to form a slightly gel-like texture when in contact with water, contributing to a natural soothing effect.
Taste: Mild and vegetal, slightly herbaceous with a subtly enveloping texture in the mouth.
History: Used since antiquity in Europe and the Middle East, marshmallow held an important place in medicinal gardens. Its botanical name, Althaea, comes from Greek meaning "to heal." Both leaves and roots were traditionally employed for their soothing properties.
Infusion Instructions: Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried marshmallow leaves in 250 ml of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes, then strain before consuming. For a preparation richer in mucilage, a cold maceration of several hours can also be considered.
